Figure 6.8 An infrared photograph of Quinby Inlet, on the lower Delmarva Peninsula, Virginia, depicts an offset inlet and an ebb-tidal delta. The growth of the bulbous end of Hog Island (the southern island) is evident in the small spits in the beach extending toward the inlet. Beaches are an integral feature of barrier islands. For many people, the idea of “going to the beach” means going to a barrier island. The houses, hotels, restaurants, and other amusements are as important to some visitors as the sandy beach berm and the surf. Tidal inlets are important, too. They provide access to harbors and calm water. If we understand how nature builds and changes beaches, barrier islands, and tidal inlets, we can make better decisions about what we do to them and how we live with them.
